If you run a business in Miami-Dade, you need a Local Business Tax Receipt (BTR) — what most owners still call the "occupational license." Here's the part that trips people up: it's not one-and-done. It expires and must be renewed every single year.
The key date: September 30. The local business tax year runs October 1 through September 30. Every BTR expires on September 30, and renewal is due before then.
The late penalty adds up fast. Miss the deadline and a 10% penalty is added in October, then an extra 5% for each additional month you're late — up to a maximum of 25% of the tax. On top of an already-overdue bill, that stings for no reason.
You probably need two. If your business sits inside a municipality — Miami, Hialeah, Miami Beach, Doral, and most others — you need both a county BTR and a city BTR. They're separate receipts with separate renewals. This is the single most common gap we see.
Post it. Once renewed, your receipt is supposed to be displayed at your place of business.
None of this is hard. It's just easy to forget — there's no friendly reminder from the county, and the year slips by.
That's exactly what we built the Compliance Copilot for. Tell it about your business once and it tracks your county and city BTR renewals (and everything else), then emails you a bilingual reminder before September 30 — free, every year.
